The purpose of the W. Harry Feinstone Center for Genomic Research is to provide research and graduate education in the area of genetic research, particularly functional genomics, providing a focal point for this activity within the University of Memphis and the Memphis Scientific community. Support of Research Infrastructure      The Center has developed and maintains a Molecular Biology Instrumentation Core (MBIC). Within this core, Dr. Barbara J. Taller (Associate Professor, MMCS) provides DNA sequence analysis and oligonucleotide sequence analysis. During the past year, the core has more than doubled the DNA sequence output and has increased the number of synthesized bases by 10-fold.      New to the MBIC is the capacity to provide case-by-case consultative services for DNA microarry, cloning and protein expression, realtime PCR, tissue culture and cell transfection. This capability has been made possible by the expertise brought to the Center by Drs. Thomas and Carrie Sutter, as well as the capitalization of equipment that occurred in the first year of the Center’s development. Student Support      The Center has provided stipends for graduate students conducting research and supported undergraduate internships. Interdisciplinary and Inter-institutional Research and Education      One of the primary goals of the Center for Genomic Research is to develop an Interdisciplinary Research Program. The driving force behind such a program is to leverage the Center’s resources to increase the research and training environment of the University of Memphis. By emphasizing interdisciplinary research, it is hoped that the Center can aid in the development and strengthening of University of Memphis educational programs that in turn support graduate research.
